Enter the Wortschatz: naughtypack

Naughtypack is one of those words that needs to be brought back. This from Arthur Golding’s translation of John Calvin’s commentary on the Psalms:

“. . . namely, to despyse froward persons & naughtypackes, . . .” (on Psalm 15)
“. . . while the wicked and the naughtie packs are in their ruffe, and welter themselues in their delights . . .” (on Psalm 37)

The OED says:
naughtipack: 2. An immoral or promiscuous man.
In 19th-cent. use only arch. and hist.
1571 A. GOLDING tr. J. Calvin On Psalms xii. 9 The naughtipacks or the ofskowrings of men.
I can’t tell you when the word “naughty” lost its old meaning and began to denote simple “misbehaving.” But some 16th-centuriers (if that is a word—centurians?), or 16th-c. religious polemicists, use it to denote spiritual wickedness.

Unrelated: here’s the picture of the day from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. But for all the massacring of innocents taking place, it’s like looking into the faculty locker room. For some reason there is a severe dearth of modesty among male faculty members (and, I am told, among the women as well). Why, for example, must one be completely naked in order to shave one’s beard? Or, in the case of one I saw yesterday, why would one remove one’s shorts and underwear (but not shirt) before fiddling with one’s combination lock—and then have to stand there with one’s butt cheeks in the open air when the first go fails to open the lock? Is this the freedom to be “manly” among men? I could go on and on, but there is no point in multiplying entities unnecessarily.

The word naughtipacks appears on my website, at http://www.abandonedcommunities.co.uk/page8.html , but until Bernard Butler drew my attention to your definition I did not know what it meant. I am grateful to you. Together we will get the word back into common usage.
