Happy Birthday, JH

If you’re online and trying to figure out what to do with your evening, how about reading some black poetry? Today is national Black Poetry Day, named because it’s the birthday of America’s first black poet (b. 1711). His name was Jupiter Hammon. The man largely (if not singlehandedly) responsible for this observance is Stanley Ransom, the “Connecticut Peddler.” Stan was the first, and so far is the only person to have printed all of Hammon’s works.

Raise a glass and a mighty cheer for Jupiter and Stan!
