CNN has a new-ish feature wherein they give Average Joe and Jane a forum to spout off on things in the news. I think this grew out of their having solicited readers to send in photos of news events, reasoning (reasonably, I think) that normal people are always on the scene before the authorities, and sometimes those people have a camera with them.
But now they are providing video clips of their opinions. This is a bridge beyond the longtime practice of a real reporter asking the man on the street for his opinion, which is then edited and placed in the article.
What I don’t understand is why anybody would give a hoot about what Everyman thinks about AIG or Obama’s Special Olympics gaffe (a “gaffe” which I personally thought was pretty funny . . . and not a gross insult to the retarded—oops, I mean, to those whose condition not like ours has no name—as all his righteously indignant critics are making it).
I haven’t and won’t look into this, but I just know that there is at least one iReporter who has gotten it into his head to be THE BEST iReporter, to record a video rant for every news item he reads, and win the pat on the back for having the most iReport posts. Whatever . . . maybe some American Studies grad student will write his dissertation on the phenomenon. Fake research for a fake PhD.
I mean, just look at these photos. I can’t get my mind off one thing: WHO CARES?
BLAH BLAH BLAH . . . just more white noise. Can’t get enough of it.
